Frederick Douglass

The purpose of this site is to inform you of all the wonderful things, history, and sights going on at the Frederick Douglass National Historic, 1411 W Street SE, Washington, DC 20020.

Frederick Douglass was born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1818. In 1872, Douglass and wife Anna move to Washington, DC: buy a house 316 A Street NE: in 1877 they break "whites only" covenant by purchasing Cedar Hill; serves as U.S. Marshalof the District of Columbia from 1877 until 1881.

On February 20, 1895, Douglass dies at his Cedar Hill home.

4th Frederick Douglass Family Festival



The National Park Service invites you to the 4th Annual Frederick Douglass Family Festival, Sunday, August 7th, 1pm-4pm at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, 1411 W Street SE in Washington, DC 20020. The festival features live music, crafts activities and tours of the historic home. Meet reenactors portraying figures from history such as Elizabeth Keckley and the Massachusetts 54th Soldiers.

MLK Jr. Film Fest at Douglass site


Come enjoy 3 days of celebration in honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. & The Civil Rights Movement with our annual film festival. The program will consist of films featuring: A&E: Biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. & The Eyes on the Prize series one and two.


Each of these feature films will be shown between the hours of 11:30 am and 2:30 pm each day from Saturday, January 15, 2011 through Monday, January 17, 2011.


Program is Free & Open to the Public
